Man Sentenced for Involvement in Illegal Gambling Business
HONOLULU, HAWAII—Edward H. Kubo, Jr., United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii, announced today that William Gilman, age 50, was sentenced on June 4, 2009 by United States District Judge Susan Oki Mollway to 20 months imprisonment. On December 19, 2008, following an eight-week trial in United States District Court, a jury found William Gilman and four other defendants guilty of various charges stemming from their involvement in the operation of an illegal gambling business in Waialua from 2003 to 2005. The Waialua illegal gambling business included cockfighting, craps and card games operated in a secluded area across the street from the Waialua school. William Gilman was the last defendant to be sentenced in this case.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). During the period 2004 to 2005, the FBI obtained court authorization to conduct wiretaps on several cellular telephones and determined that three Honolulu Police Department officers were providing advance notice to the illegal gambling business operators of planned raids by Honolulu Police Department gambling detail officers. In early 2005, Honolulu Police Department gambling detail undercover officers in a separate and unrelated investigation frequented the Waialua cockfights and video taped the operation and participants. William Gilman, his father Douglas Gilman, Sr., age 78, and his brother Douglas Gilman, Jr., age 55, were convicted of conspiring to conduct the illegal gambling business and conducting the illegal gambling business in Waialua.
Micha Terragna was also convicted of conspiring with her husband, former Honolulu Police Department Sergeant, Kevin Brunn, age 46, to obstruct the enforcement of state gambling laws and of extorting monies from operators of the illegal gambling business.
Kevin Brunn was convicted of conspiring with Terragna to obstruct the enforcement of state gambling laws, conspiring with Terragna to extort monies form the illegal gambling business operators and monies from illegal gambling business operators.
District Judge Mollway previously sentenced the other four defendants as follows:
- Douglas Gilman, Sr.: 24 months imprisonment
- Douglas Gilman, Jr.: 24 months imprisonment
- Micha Terragna: 24 months imprisonment
- Kevin Brunn: 30 months imprisonment
U. S. Attorney Kubo complimented the FBI and HPD for their outstanding investigation of this case and their efforts to purge the Waialua area of illegal gambling activities.
